Sharing this blog post as part of Craniosacral Therapy Awareness Week (9th -15th March 2026).
If you've been searching for natural, non-invasive, healing treatments that support stress relief, anxiety reduction, pain management and nervous system regulation, you may have come across Reiki and Craniosacral Therapy.
Both are gentle, hands-on (or near hands-on) treatments that support your body’s natural healing ability. Both can help with stress, anxiety, chronic pain and tension, trauma recovery, fatigue, headaches and emotional overwhelm. And both offer a calm, safe space where your body can relax deeply.
But they are different in how they work.
From my Therapy Room here in Tadworth, I work with clients online and in-person across Surrey, including Banstead, Epsom, Reigate, Kingswood and surrounding areas, offering both Reiki and Craniosacral Therapy (alongside other holistic therapies), in a safe and welcoming environment.
Below, I’ll guide you through what each therapy involves, how they differ, and how to choose the right support for your needs.
What Is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese energy healing practice developed in the early 1900s by Mikao Usui.
The word Reiki means ‘Universal Life Force Energy’. Eastern medicine has always recognised and worked with this energy, which flows through all living things and is vital to wellbeing. When we are stressed, overwhelmed, grieving, anxious, or physically unwell, this energy can feel depleted or blocked, and lead to physical, emotional and energetic imbalances.
During a Reiki session, the client remains fully clothed, lies on the treatment couch and the practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body to facilitate the flow of healing energy. There is no massage or manipulation. Instead, it works on an energetic level, supporting balance, relaxation, and the body’s natural healing response.
Many clients describe Reiki as deeply calming and restorative. It encourages your nervous system to shift from “fight or flight” into “rest and repair.”
It is subtle, yet powerful.
Benefits of Reiki
Profound sense of calm and peace
Emotional release and clarity
Stress and anxiety reduction
Increased feelings of grounding and connection
Support during periods of transition or emotional healing
Conditions Reiki Can Help With
Reiki is often used to support emotional, physical, spiritual and energetic well-being, and can help with the following and more:
Stress relief
Anxiety support
Sleep issues
Grief and life transitions
Hormonal imbalance support
Burnout, fatigue and low energy
Trauma and emotional healing
Spiritual growth and self-awareness
Deep relaxation
General wellbeing
What Is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy evolved from osteopathy and focuses on the craniosacral system which consists of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. This system runs from the skull (cranium) down to the base of the spine (sacrum) and plays a vital role in the health of the central nervous system.
Practitioners use very light touch to feel subtle movements in the body and release tension and imbalances that may be affecting the nervous system. By doing so, the body is encouraged to shift out of a stress or “fight-or-flight” state and into a mode of rest, repair and healing.
Craniosacral Therapy is especially helpful when stress, tension and trauma has become physically held in the body.
Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy
Deep physical and mental relaxation
Improved nervous system regulation
Relief from chronic tension and pain
Enhanced body awareness and mind–body connection
Support for the body’s natural healing processes
Conditions Craniosacral Therapy Can Help With
Craniosacral Therapy works gently with the nervous system, connective tissues, and the body’s stress response. By encouraging regulation and balance within these systems, Craniosacral Therapy is often used to support a wide range of physical, emotional and neurological concerns such as:
Chronic stress
Chronic fatigue
Headaches and migraines
Neck and shoulder tension
Back pain
Jaw tension and TMJ issues
Trauma stored in the body
Sleep disturbances
Nervous system dysregulation
Post-injury recovery
What Clients Can Experience in a Session
Although the techniques are different, both therapies are usually very calming.
During a Reiki Session
A client may experience:
Deep calm
Warmth or tingling sensations
Gentle waves of energy
Emotional release
Deep stillness or relaxation
Feeling clarity or lightness
Falling asleep
Some sessions feel subtle. Others feel profound. There is no “right” way to experience Reiki. Your body receives exactly what it needs as Reiki works gently but effectively, supporting emotional and energetic balance.
During a Craniosacral Therapy Session
The client also remains fully clothed and lies comfortably on the couch. The practitioner uses gentle touch, often at the head, spine or pelvis.
Clients may notice:
Subtle pulsing sensations
Gentle unwinding movements and shifts in the body
Muscle softening and relief from tension
Deep stillness
Emotional release
Memories surfacing
A feeling of spaciousness
Deep nervous system settling
Craniosacral Therapy often feels very quiet and subtle, but powerful changes can occur beneath the surface.
How Craniosacral Therapy and Reiki Are Similar
Although they are different modalities, Craniosacral Therapy and Reiki share several important qualities:
Both can help to reduce stress and anxiety
Both are gentle and non-invasive, making them suitable for people of all ages.
Both encourage deep relaxation, which helps the body shift into a healing state.
Both work holistically, treating the whole person (mentally, emotionally, physically and energetically) rather than just the symptoms.
Both work with the body’s natural healing intelligence.
Both support the nervous system, either directly (Craniosacral Therapy) or energetically (Reiki).
Both can support trauma recovery.
Both can be used alongside conventional medical care as complementary therapies.
Both therapies are especially helpful in today’s world, where chronic stress and nervous system overload are so common. Clients often report feeling calmer, lighter and more grounded after sessions of either therapy.
How Craniosacral Therapy and Reiki Are Different
While they share similarities, the differences lie in how they work and what they focus on:
Craniosacral Therapy: | Reiki: |
Hands-on physical modality | Energy-based modality |
Focuses on the craniosacral system | Focuses on universal life force energy |
Works with the fascia and nervous system | Works with the energetic field |
Often addresses emotional and physical pain and tension | Often addresses emotional and energetic imbalances |
Based in anatomy and physiology | Rooted in spiritual and energetic principles |
In simple terms:
Reiki works more with energy. Craniosacral Therapy works more with the physical nervous system.
Which One Is Right for You?
Choosing between Craniosacral Therapy and Reiki depends on your individual needs and preferences.
If you’re experiencing physical tension, nervous system dysregulation or chronic pain patterns, Craniosacral Therapy may be a good fit as it listens to the quiet rhythms within your body - the subtle tide of fluid and fascia that holds your story. Through light, respectful touch, your nervous system is invited to soften and remember safety.
If you’re seeking emotional healing, stress relief or energetic balance, Reiki may resonate more deeply. Reiki reconnects you with universal life energy - gently clearing what feels heavy and restoring what feels depleted. It is nurturing, intuitive and deeply calming.
Some clients find that alternating between or combining both therapies offers the most comprehensive support, addressing both physical and energetic aspects of healing.
Some Final Thoughts
Both Craniosacral Therapy and Reiki offer powerful, gentle ways to support healing and well-being. Both therapies work gently with the body’s stress response, helping it to move from survival mode into safety. While they differ in approach, their intention is the same i.e. to honour the body’s innate wisdom and capacity to heal when given the right support. Whether you choose one or explore both, these therapies can be valuable tools on your holistic healing journey.
Both therapies create space.
Space to breathe.
Space to release.
Space to return to yourself.
Whether you choose Reiki or Craniosacral Therapy, the work is about creating safety, balance and space for your body to do what it already knows how to do.
Healing does not have to be intense.
It does not have to involve reliving pain.
And it does not have to be rushed.
If you’re curious to experience the benefits for yourself, booking a session can be a wonderful first step. Whether you’re seeking deep relaxation, emotional balance, or support for physical tension, a personalised session can help you discover what works best for you.
